From his early days busking in New York subways via his seminal 1993 debut album 'Fear Nothing' to his solo and collaborative work of today, Kevin Montgomery's songs are always sung from the heart and from bittersweet experience.
His musical influences have led to comparisons with Jackson Browne and Neil Young, however his music is a unique blend of, in the words of the autobiographical title track from his latest album 'Another Long Story', 'a little rock, a little country'.
Building on the success of this third album, following on from 'Fear Everything' and the hugely popular European tours and US appearances over the last twelve months, Kevin is currently laying plans for an Autumn tour of the UK and Europe and the possible release of a live acoustic CD.
Early in 2001, he again went into the studio with a lineup which was to become known as 'Paint'. Featuring guitarist Doug Pettibone along with Robert Reynolds and Paul Deakin of The Mavericks on bass and drums, the intention was to capture the essence of their recent live shows.
The resulting EP includes three tracks written by Kevin: The melodic ballad 'Bella Bina' which was composed while on tour in Italy, has the intimate and introspective feel of Kevin's solo albums, while the uptempo 'Melrose' and 'Tennessee Girl' (on which Country superstar Trisha Yearwood came into the studio to add harmony vocals) are established live favourites.
A cover of the Gin Blossoms' 'Cajun Song' with Robert Reynolds on vocals completes the EP.
The limited edition CD was available for fans to buy at their gigs in the USA and Europe earlier this year.
Trisha Yearwood of course is only the latest in a long and impressive line of high profile and established artists that Kevin has worked with. Earlier in his career he fronted for both Sheryl Crowe and David Crosby, and he has duetted on albums with Mary Chapin-Carpenter and CMA award winner Lee Ann Womack.
Artists such as Martina McBride and Juice Newton have covered Kevin's songs and he has worked with Rodney Crowell and Jon Randall. Kevin has even found time in his busy touring schedule to produce and write songs with a number of up and coming artists including Anna Wilson and the award-winning Cindy Alexander.
Another personal and career highlight was when he was invited to perform at Sir Paul McCartney's annual Buddy Holly birthday event in London after the former Beatle heard 'Another Long Story'.
Kevin's Buddy Holly link stretches back to the fifties and sixties when his Dad, Bob Montgomery, was songwriting partner and best friend of Holly. They performed together as the duo 'Buddy and Bob'. Meanwhile, Kevin's Mom Carol, famously sang background vocals on Elvis' 'Suspicious Minds'
